The Secret Shropshire project gathers together Shropshire’s
exceptional archaeological, historical and environmental heritage and display
many items that rarely see the light of day. The website explores the landscape, geology and history
that has shaped the communities in six key areas of Shropshire;
- Clun (faded historic centre)
- Oswestry (historic market town, former industrial hinterland and important limestone uplands)
- Ellesmere and the Meres and Mosses (market town and distinctive glacial habitats)
- Wroxeter (Roman town and hinterland)
- Bridgnorth (Medieval fortress and trade and communications centre)
- Ironbridge (and in modern times Telford - cradle of the industrial revolution)

You can pursue your own interests through the huge searchable
database of digitised materials. There are maps, old documents, old
and new photographs of buildings, towns, archaeological sites and finds, wildlife
photos, landscapes, nature reserves and geology.
The project was based at Shropshire Archives in Shrewsbury, supported by the Lottery under the New Opportunities Fund ‘Digitise
Programme’.
