Comfrey

Alternative common names for this well known plant provide a clue to its historical use. These names include Boneset, Bruisewort, Healing Herb, and Knitbone. Historically it has most commonly been used externally in the form of a poultice. A poultice is basically a mashed up plant, sometimes slightly heated, that is spread over the affected area of the body. Comfrey has been used this way for the treatment of cuts, bruises, sprains, sores, eczema, varicose veins, and broken bones. It might well have been used in the aftermath of the Battle of Shrewsbury.
