The Battle of Shrewsbury
|
Thousands of people died during the Battle of Shrewsbury. This is not surprising when you
consider that good Longbow archers could shoot 12 arrows a minute.
The Battle lasted only 3 hours, but during that time, 3,000 men were wounded and by some
estimates, 7,000 men died.
The coats of armour worn by the soldiers during the Battle of Shrewsbury were heavy and
difficult to move about in. If you were the leader of troops, it was very difficult to command
and control them if you had the visor of your helmet down.

Many soldiers therefore fought with their visors up, which is probably why Harry Hotspur is
thought to have been killed with an arrow wound to his head.
The 'winner' of this battle was King Henry IV, Harry Hotspur died on the battlefield.
His body was cut up and sent all around the kingdom, to show people they should not rebel against the king.
