Castles in Shropshire
|
The Normans first introduced castles into England and Shropshire after the
Conquest of England
by
William, Duke of Normandy in 1066. Due to his victory at the Battle of
Hastings, William was
crowned King of England and became William I. In order to exert control over his new kingdom
he built castles across England.

In Shropshire, William the Conqueror constructed
Shrewsbury Castle in earth and timber sometime between 1067-9 to extend his control over the county.

This is a model of what Shrewsbury Castle may have looked like in the 12th century.
It shows the motte (where Laura's Tower now stands) and the bailey with all its bustling activity.
This model can be found in Shrewsbury Castle.
