Ducking stools were once a very popular method of punishment in Britain, but by the nineteenth century they had fallen out of use. It was mostly used for punishing women who could not hold their tongue and who were therefore seen as a public nuisance. The punishment for such women was to be placed in a ducking stool before being lowered into water as shown here.
