A Journey through Shropshire
|
This priory was founded in the 12th century,
during the Norman period (1066-1154). Today, little remains of the priory.
However, the gatehouse to the priory, which was built in the 14th century,
has survived well.

Why is this site important?
Archaeological digs have shown that people have lived near this site for over
5,000 years. The earliest pieces of evidence are beakers and pits from the
Neolithic period (4000-2300 BC). A Bronze Age (2300-700 BC) cemetery has
also been found in
the area. The Romans built a large
marching camp here around 48-75 AD. There are also signs of an Anglo Saxon
(AD 450-1066) cemetery from the 7th or 8th century.
