The section of the map relating to Ellesmere Whitemere, near Ellesmere

The water in the meres of North Shropshire is full of nutrients, because it has drained through mineral rich layers of earth before entering the lakes.

This enables algae, plankton and pond weed to grow, which in turn supports a large number of fish.

The swamps, marshes and wet woodland associated with meres are also very important for wildlife.
