A Journey through Shropshire
|
The Corbet family built Moreton Corbet Castle in the 16th century, on the foundations of an ancient castle.
A small keep, built around 1200, still stands on the site. The castle was destroyed during the Civil
War (1642-1651).

Moreton Corbet Castle and the Civil War
Sir Vincent Corbet, an M.P. for Shropshire in 1640, declared his support for the king at the start of the Civil War and was knighted in 1641.
Eventually, Corbet became the commanding officer of a regiment in the War. Just how good he was is open to debate.
He did see action during the battle at
Naseby, and also during the battle to save his house from being destroyed.
In 1644, Moreton Corbet was attacked by Parliamentary forces and destroyed. Vincent Corbet was fined £2,822
for supporting King Charles I (1625-1649).
