Section of map showing Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury Castle was built between 1070 and 1080 by Roger de Montgomery, a follower of William the Conqueror.

It became a Royal castle in 1102, when Roger de Montgomery's younger son, Robert de Belesme, the third Earl of Shrewsbury, was banished for supporting a rebellion.

In 1215, the Welsh took control of the castle and held control of the town for many months.

A watercolour of Shrewsbury Castle

How do we know when this print was painted?

To the left of this picture there is a large tower on top of the hill. This is Laura's Tower, which was built by Thomas Telford for Sir William Pultney when he lived at the castle. Thomas Telford worked at the castle around 1790, so this picture must have been completed after this time.

Shrewsbury's railway station is also missing from this picture.  It was built around 1848.

From these two pieces of information we can work out that this picture was painted at sometime between 1790 and 1848.
