Section of map showing Stanton Lacy Church

St. Peter's church at Stanton Lacy was built during the Saxon period (AD 597-1066).

The area around Stanton Lacy has been important throughout prehistory. It was settled in the Bronze Age and occupation of the site continued through the Saxon period and into  Roman (AD 43 - 450) and medieval (1066-1547) times. In the eleventh century Stanton was held by the de Lacy family, the same family who built Ludlow Castle.

The church is of a characteristic Saxon design and has outside walls decorated with 'pilasters'. These are flat rectangular columns that project only slightly from the wall.  Archaeologists believe that the churchyard is even older than the church itself. The churchyard is circular in shape and could be the remains of a round enclosure that would once have contained a Celtic church.
