Section of map showing Stokesay Castle

Stokesay Castle is actually a fortified manor house, rather than a castle as its name suggests.  It was largely built by Lawrence of Ludlow, a rich wool merchant, during the 13th century.  The building was added to and modified over the years and the timber framed gatehouse dates from around 1640.  The whole area is surrounded by a moat, although historians believe that it was never filled with water.

What was happening at this time?

This period of history was quite peaceful. Edward I (1272-1307) had managed to subdue the Welsh and life along the English/Welsh border became more settled.
