Mining

East Shropshire Coalfield What is Coal? Through the ages Villages Men and women Death and Disaster Decline and Closure New life

Local mine owners often played an important role in the life of nearby villages and sometimes built houses for their workers. Some villages also developed as a direct result of mining, for example Highley, near Bridgnorth which grew because it was near to local coalmines.

Highley's Garden Village

The Woodhill Garden Village Company helped Highley develop by building houses for the miners of the Billingsley Colliery Company in Highley.  These houses were built between World Wars One and Two and became known as the Garden Village. The houses had indoor bathrooms, something that hadn't been seen in Highley before.

The Garden Village is made up of a number of streets, including Oak Street, Ash Street and Beech Street.

This photograph shows some of the streets that make up the Garden Village in Highley
