In 1853 the burial act was introduced. This allowed local authorities to open their own cemeteries. From 1853 onwards most burials in towns took place in these cemeteries. Shrewsbury’s first General Cemetery records, for the Abbey Cemetery, cover the years between 1841 and 1881. There is also an index to graves in the Bridgnorth cemetery covering the years between 1855 and 1957.
