Quarter Sessions were responsible for the maintenance of gaol, or prison, buildings by the 16th century and for their administration by the 19th century. Records in the Quarter Sessions themselves include visiting justices report books (1823-1878), copy returns of prisoners (1890-93), reports on prisoners (1856-1861) and entry books of debtors held in prisons between 1730 and 1785.
