Family History

The Preens Richard (1807) The Williams Anne James Mary John Richard (1854)
Samuel

Richard Preen was the fifth son of Richard and Sarah Preen.  He was born in Leebotwood and baptised there on 5th February 1854. He appeared in the 1861 census, living with the majority of the family in the grocer's shop at Leebotwood.  He did not appear again in the Leebotwood records, although he was only 17 at the time of the 1871 census.

Richard seems to have become a cabinet maker and may have left home when he became an apprentice.  His location at the time of the 1871 census may give further information about this.  However, by February 1880, he was established as a cabinet maker, living in Northampton. He was still living there at the time of the 1880 census. His wife came from Withington, near Chorlton, in Lancashire.

The marriage was held on 24th February 1880 at the Wesley chapel in Withington, by certificate according to the rites and ceremonies of the Wesleyan Methodists.  The groom was Richard Preen, a bachelor aged 26.  He is listed as a cabinet maker, living at 29 Spring Gardens Northampton and as the son of Richard Preen, a grocer.  The bride was Martha Jane Cheesbrough, a spinster aged 20, living at Beulah Lodge Withington and the daughter of George Cheesbrough, another grocer.  The witnesses were Joseph O'Gorman (registrar), Samuel Deakin and Ann Elizabeth Cheesbrough.  All three witnesses, as well as the bride and groom, signed the wedding certificate.

Richard and Martha had four children who were born in the 10 years between 1881 and 1891.  The first was Annie Lilian Preen,  who was born in 1881.

By September 1885, when Frederick William Preen was born, the family had moved to 89 Wilmslow Road, Withington. Frederick was born on 24th September 1885.  Edith Martha Preen, the couples second daughter, was born on 24th August 1887, whilst their youngest child, Albert Cecil Preen, was born on 22nd August 1891. All of these births took place at 89 Wilmslow Road and were registered two months after they took place.

The Calendar of Wills indicates that in March 1923, when Martha Jane died, and in October 1925, when Richard died, the family home had moved to 106 Wilmslow Road, Withington. By this time two of his sons, Frederick William and Albert Cecil, had become cabinet makers like their father.
