The River Severn

The River Severn is 388 kilometres, or 220 miles, long, making it  the longest river in Britain.  The river has only had this claim to fame since the most recent ice age, 10, 000 years ago.  Before this it  flowed northwards into the sea, but an ice sheet blocked its way and it started to flow southwards into the Bristol Channel.

It flows from the Cambrian Mountains in Wales, via Shrewsbury, Ironbridge, Bridgnorth, Bewdley, Worcester and Gloucester to the Bristol Channel.

This map shows the route of the River Severn from Wales and through Shropshire.
