Description: This is thought to have been the original coke furnace used by Abraham Darby I in the 18th century. It was in 1708 that Abraham Darby leased this old blast furnace in Coalbrookdale. Soon after he became the first to successfully smelt iron ore using coke as fuel rather than charcoal.
