Description: This is thought to have been the original coke furnace used by Abraham Darby in the 18th century. In 1708, Abraham Darby I, leased this old blast furnace in Coalbrookdale and managed to succeed in smelting iron ore using coke as fuel rather than charcoal for the first time. You can visit this site in Coalbrookdale and visit the nearby Museum of Iron, to find out more.
