Description: The original bridge at Coalport was constructed of timber in 1780 and lasted until severe flooding of the River Severn in 1795 virtually washed away the mid stream supporting pier. Inspired by the survival of the Iron Bridge, just several miles upstream, the Trustees of Coalport Bridge decided to modify the bridge into a single span cast iron structure. John Onions of Broseley and John Guest carried this out in 1799.
