The execution of John Richards

Date: 2003

Description: John Richards was executed at Shrewsbury in 1818 for stealing eight fat sheep from a farmer called John Wilson. The details of the case are given in this 'penny dreadful'. These were a dramatised account of the crime, which were sold at the public execution of the condemned. Many of these accounts were printed in Shrewsbury by Waidson, the printers, who were based in Doglane, now known as Claremont Street.
