Gatehouse to the Council House, Shrewsbury

Date:2003

Description: This impressive timber-frame building stands in the Castle Gates area of Shrewsbury. Built around 1620 it was once a meeting place for the Council of the Marches who effectively controlled the English Welsh border up until the Civil War (1642 1651). Despite the grand nature of this building, the main base of power within the Council centred at Ludlow.
