Description: In this image of Holdgate Castle only the tower and the lower part of the wall are medieval. There was a castle here at the time of the Domesday Survey (1086). This would have been made of timber. In the 13th century the motte (manmade castle mound) was topped with a tower house of stone. This was probably rectangular with 4 round towers. By 1383 the castle was said to be ruined. The building joining onto the medieval walls is a farmhouse (Photograph by Dr Paul Stamper).
