Description: The ruinous Great Tower at Clun Castle dates to the late 13th century. At four storeys high it stands over 25 metres tall, and, because of its dimensions, was built into the motte instead of on top. The tower was built to impress. It may look like a keep but was in fact mainly accommodation suites and lodgings for important guests that included Edward I in 1295 and Edward III in 1362. (Photograph by Dr Paul Stamper).
