Description: The 14th century stone keep for the Norman (1066 - 1154) Castle at Hopton Castle. In 1644, during the Civil War, 24 Roundhead soldiers were besieged in the castle by Cavaliers. The Roundheads were outnumbered, but they did not immediately surrender and were therefore seen to have broken the rules of war. As a consequence, when they eventually surrendered, each of them had a hand or arm cut off before being killed. (Photograph by Dr Paul Stamper).
