Description: Ludlow Castle was probably begun at some point before 1085 by Walter de Lacy. The Castle is built in an excellent position for defense. It stands on high ground and is guarded by both the rivers Teme and Corve. Unlike most castles, it was built of stone from the very beginning of its existence. The stone was readily available and was quarried from the site of the castle itself. (Photograph by Dr Paul Stamper).
