Description: The castle at Bishops Castle was re-fortified in 1167 at a cost of 20 marks. It is thought that this work included the replacement of timber buildings with structures made of stone. A settlement was also established close to the castle and in 1203 this was granted a market charter by Bishop Giles de Broase. In turn this paved the way for the establishment of a planned town to the south of the castle and this became modern day Bishops Castle.
