Description: Ludlow Castle was abandoned after 1689 and soon fell into a state of decay. Townspeople looted the buildings for useful materials and the principle rooms lost their roofs. In the 1760's the Government considered demolition but in view of the cost preferred to lease it in 1771 to the Earl of Powys. The castle became a picturesque romantic ruin attracting many visitors. Walks were laid out around the castle in 1772 and the ruins became an important amenity that helped to promote Ludlow as a flourishing social centre.
