Ludlow Castle curtain wall

Date: 2003

Description: This curtain wall enclosed Ludlow castle and formed the first line of its defence. The walls were made very thick for added protection and had battlements or "crenellations" to further enhance their defensive power. From these and the wall-walk, defenders could fire arrows and prevent attackers from scaling the walls. (Image kindly supplied by Shropshire Sites and Monuments Record)
