Description: Robert Burnell began work on Acton Burnell Castle in 1284. He was one of the most powerful and influential men of his time, serving as a secretary to King Edward I (1272-1307), as Chancellor of England and Bishop of Bath and Wells. His castle was not really a castle at all, but rather a fortified manor house. It consists of a central block with projecting rectangular towers at the four corners and was designed to provide lodging for Robert Burnell and his household, as well as accommodation for his officials and attendants.
