Great hall, Stokesay Castle

Date: 2003

Description: Stokesay Castle is about 22 miles south of Shrewsbury and 7 miles north west of Ludlow. It was built by a wealthy wool merchant, Laurence de Ludlow, in the 13th century. The great hall was built after 1281, it is 50 feet in length, with large windows looking over to the moat, and impressive timber beams on the ceiling. During the 19th century Stokesay Castle was sympathetically restored, and since the 1980's English Heritage has worked on the castle, restoring it and opening it up to the public.
