Description: The castle at Whittington was originally a motte and bailey design but a fortified stone keep replaced this in the early 13th century. During this phase of remodelling the castle defences were also strengthened by a series of banks and ditches to the west and south, a moat to the east and an area of marshland to the north. This photograph shows the impressive scale of the surviving remains.
