Date: 2003
Description: Ellesmere Castle is a motte and bailey castle that may have been built by Earl Rodger de Montgomery in the late 11th century. The first historical references occur late in the reign of King Henry 1st in around A.D. 1130's and the castle was repaired in 1171-1172. The bailey is roughly crescent shaped and measures some 20-30 meters wide.
